SEO, AEO and GEO: a practical content plan for small businesses
Understand search optimisation and AI answer discovery, then build a useful content plan with clear answers, sources and measurable goals.
For business owners, marketing teams and content freelancers

SEO helps people discover useful pages through search. AEO focuses on answering questions clearly, while GEO commonly describes visibility in generative AI answers. Begin with accessible, accurate, original content and descriptive internal links. These practices support discovery; no markup, file or keyword list guarantees rankings or AI citations.
Treat the terms as overlapping work
An audience may find your business through a traditional result, an AI summary or a follow-up question in a search conversation. The same page needs to be understandable in each case. Google states that its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI features; publishers do not need a separate special optimisation to qualify for those features.
AEO and GEO are useful planning terms, but they do not define a universal submission process across Google, Bing, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Each service chooses its own retrieval and presentation behaviour. Build a useful source instead of writing hidden instructions asking an AI system to promote it.
Map the questions your customers actually ask
For a fictional local service business, separate “what does this service include?”, “how do I prepare?”, “what changes the cost?” and “is it available in my area?”. Answer them with information the business can substantiate. Combine closely related questions rather than producing many near-identical pages with different city names.
Use customer conversations and available search-performance reports to refine the plan. Treat a topic as an idea until you have evidence of demand. A fashionable AI phrase is not proof that it belongs on every page.
- Discovery: explain the problem and the options.
- Evaluation: show relevant differences and practical limitations.
- Decision: make scope, process and next steps clear.
- After purchase: answer preparation and support questions.
Make each page a useful answer
Open with a direct answer, then explain the process, an example and the questions that affect the decision. Use headings that describe the content. Where a tool or policy can change, link to its primary documentation and record when you checked it. Publish an accurate author or organisation identity rather than inventing an expert reviewer.
For a tutorial, include an original worked example. For a business page, use your actual process and evidence. Avoid unverifiable superlatives and repetitive keyword paragraphs. Readers need enough detail to act, not a page padded to reach an arbitrary word count.
Check the technical foundations
Important text should be available to crawlers, with consistent canonical URLs, descriptive page titles, working links and mobile-readable layouts. Structured data must reflect the visible page. Google’s guidance also highlights internal linking and crawl access, including restrictions imposed by hosting infrastructure.
OpenAI distinguishes its search crawler from its training crawler. Allowing OAI-SearchBot can support eligibility for ChatGPT search discovery, but does not guarantee inclusion. Check robots.txt and actual access responses; a robots rule alone cannot overcome a firewall block.
Measure progress without claiming certainty
Monitor indexing, relevant impressions, search visits and useful customer actions. AI referrals can provide additional evidence, while citation reports depend on the service and access available to you. A single prompt result is not a stable ranking report.
Review pages when the business offering or technical facts change. DigiMarketing Pro provides the marketing foundation; DigiGenAI Pro complements it with responsible AI workflows. The practical goal is to become a useful, trustworthy answer to a defined customer question.
Common questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. They overlap. Clear, accessible and reliable pages support search and answer discovery, while each platform decides which sources it presents.
Do FAQ schema or llms.txt guarantee AI visibility?
No. Structured data should describe visible content. No special file guarantees that a search engine or AI service will retrieve, rank or cite a page.
